Maldivian Breakfast Traditional Meals

There are couple of new things that can be tried in every destination you land in the world. One such fine example would be the local food from the destination you travel. When it comes to Maldives, we also have such great offering for any thrill seeking adventurer. The taste of each of the food categories and items even varies within the same nation based on local culture and the customs.

In Maldives, Addu Atoll which is Southern end of the Maldives they have such similar changes in food preparation method and items when compared to Northern parts of the Maldives.

There are couple of foods which are common throughout Maldives and could probably be unique to Maldives itself. One such could be the Rihaakuru, which is prepared in raw and various forms, in summary the preparation of process is cooking the fish soup usually tuna soup after removing fish until the water content is fully evaporated leaving the remaining of soup formed as a paste. The Rihaakuru in its raw form also can be eaten however people usually prefer using it for various other form of food preparation.

Among the various foods and usually breakfast options for Maldivian and tourists along the best option to go like Maldivian style is enjoying a breakfast with Mashuni. To simply put its like a salad kind of mix fish with various other spices.

The of the ingredients includes:

  • Crushed coconuts
  • Cooked fish or smoked fish
  • Curry leaves
  • Lemon or lime
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Onion
  • Chili peppers
  • Salad leaves ( based on preference)


Usually the resulting Mashuni can be used to eat with Chapati or traditional Maldivian Coconut Mixed Chapati in a morning breakfast.

Additionally, Mashuni is also used to play a vital role in the short eats preparation of us Maldivian. Most probably all the short eat that goes into more spicy form will have some sort of Mashuni combined with them. For example gulha, bajiya, boakiba, toasts etc.
